Extending Dining Tables

Extending dining table: more seats when you need them

An extending dining table stays compact for everyday meals and grows when guests arrive. It solves a common problem in UK homes: a dining area sized for everyday meals that hosts the whole family at Christmas. Our extending dining tables come in ceramic and Japandi wood veneer finishes.

Each standalone model states its closed and open length in the product name, so you can plan the space precisely. The range sits alongside sideboards, chairs and storage, so you can choose furniture for every room in one place.

How an extending dining table works

An extending dining table adds length with extension sections at the ends or in the middle of the top. On the Bergamo, the extensions sit at each end of the table. You slide them out and secure them, taking the length from 180cm to 260cm.

On the Tokyo oval, the table pulls apart. The extension then rises into place from underneath the top, so there is no separate leaf to store. The Tokyo oval and the Verona both extend from 160cm to 200cm. The table then slides back to its smaller size to free up floor space.

A common mistake is to measure the room for the closed size only. Measure for the open length, then add around 90cm on each side for chairs. If you want to compare fixed and extending formats, browse our full dining table range.

Ceramic or wood veneer: choosing the top

A ceramic extending dining table uses a sintered stone top, designed to resist heat, moisture and everyday stains. It also wipes clean with a damp cloth, which suits families who eat at the table every day.

The Verona extending dining table comes in three colours. A white extending dining table brightens a dark room, while grey suits most kitchens. A black extending dining table such as the black Verona gives a strong contrast with pale chairs.

The Bergamo is an extending ceramic dining table with a white marble effect top and looped black legs. For more fixed and extending options in this material, see our ceramic dining tables.

If you prefer a softer shape, choose an oval extending dining table. The Tokyo oval has a wood veneer top and a grooved base, in natural or black. Its rounded ends make it easier to move around in a tight room. For a compact table that never needs extending, browse our round dining tables for smaller rooms.

How many people can each table seat?

The Tokyo dining sets are listed as a 6-8 seater extending dining table: six places when closed, eight once extended. The Verona opens to the same 200cm length.

For larger gatherings, the Bergamo opens to 260cm. That length makes it an 8 seater extending dining table at the very least. The Bergamo dining sets are listed as 8-10 seaters. Check the leg position on the product page, as legs can limit seats at the ends.

When closed, the Verona and the Tokyo oval measure 160cm, and the Bergamo 180cm. If you rarely need extra seats, a fixed 6 seater dining table may be simpler. An extending dining room table pays off when your guest list changes often.

Building a matching set

An extending dining table and chairs pairing should work at both sizes. Buy enough chairs for the open table, then store the extra ones nearby. Armless chairs slide under the top more easily when the table is closed.

Some listings come as a complete extending dining table set. The black Tokyo oval is sold with six Elda, Bilbao or Tiago chairs. The Bergamo is sold with eight Bilbao, Girona or Almeria chairs, and extra chairs can be bought separately.

If you buy an extending dining table on its own, our dining chairs in sets of 6 match the everyday capacity of the larger tables. Faux leather chairs wipe clean as easily as a ceramic top.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the extension leaves stored?

On the Tokyo and Bergamo dining sets, the extensions are built in. They rise into place from under the top, so there is no separate leaf to store. Check each product page for the exact mechanism of the model you choose.

Is a ceramic top heavy to extend?

On the Bergamo, you slide out the extension at each end and secure it. You do not lift the top itself. Two people make the process quicker on longer tables, especially when chairs stand close by.

Can a ceramic top take hot dishes?

Sintered stone is designed to resist heat. Using trivets under very hot pans remains good practice to protect any table finish.

Which extending table suits a small room?

The Verona and the Tokyo oval start at 160cm when closed. The oval shape of the Tokyo leaves more space to walk past the ends.

Are the tables delivered assembled?

The Tokyo and Bergamo dining sets are delivered flat-packed, with assembly instructions. For the other models, check the product page before ordering. Once the table is in place, wipe the top with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
